You're

The Therapist.

You’ve taken on the role in your family of the kind or wise confidant people seek out when they’re hurting. You quickly perceive what loved ones are feeling, and innately understand how to comfort and de-escalate drama.

When you were younger, there may have been a void of emotionally calm and safe spaces, so you stepped in to give this to caregivers or siblings in need of someone to talk to.

As a family cycle-breaker, you extend empathy in all directions – even up the lineage to ancestors you’ve never met. Their pain weighs on your heart. You try to heal parents, siblings, and children by holding big space for other’s emotional experiences. This can look like listening deeply, translating between people, helping others regulate, or carrying emotional weight on your own shoulders.

What's good about being a Therapist

You’re deeply empathetic, perceptive, and wise. You have a high emotional intelligence and a real gift for helping people feel seen and understood. Others feel safe around you with their most vulnerable thoughts, and you make the world a kinder place.

What's hard about being a Therapist

Over time, this role can leave you empty. You may…
• Feel overly responsible for other people’s feelings and experiences
• Feel used by people who only reach out when they need a boost
• Struggle to express your own needs or take up space
• Notice that you give a lot emotionally but don’t feel met in the same way
• Feel unseen – everyone always assumes you’re fine

The Therapist is a cycle-breaker who often tries to heal their family by being an endless reservoir of compassion, wisdom, and emotional availability. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of being able to receive the support they need in return. If left unaddressed, children and grandchildren may also learn that their role is to tend to everyone else’s feelings first, making it hard for them to know their own needs or feel permission to receive.
